Introducing TeRa: The Mascot Born from Tech Frustration

A comparison of a hand drawn angry laptop with the finished digital art version

I’ve created a mascot for my business! What started as an afternoon doodle on my tablet has turned into something I’m quite chuffed with – a visual representation of what I’m trying to do for self-employed folks and small business owners across the UK.

The Birth of TeRa

It wasn’t planned. One afternoon, I found myself sketching out a concept that seemed to capture exactly what my business is about. The design came together naturally, and I was genuinely pleased with the result – a character that could bring a bit of fun to my marketing while embodying an experience we’ve all had.

Why a mascot matters

When I first developed this business concept, specifically targeting self-employed individuals and small businesses, I wanted to acknowledge the genuine frustration that technology often creates. We can all picture that classic scene in films – someone desperately trying to complete a simple task on their computer, being thwarted at every turn by the very systems meant to “make things easier,” until they finally snap and hurl their device at the nearest wall.

That feeling? It’s universal. And I genuinely empathise.

My Technology Journey

I’ve been working with computers since I was 6. I was using the internet back in 1995, owned a mobile phone in 1997, and have worked with AI for many years before it became the buzzword it is today. It’s fair to say I’m ahead of the curve when it comes to technology adoption and understanding.

Yet even with this background, I still get frustrated by how needlessly complex our digital world has become. The forceful integration of technology into everyone’s lives isn’t always beneficial, especially for busy professionals focused on their core services rather than becoming tech experts.

Meet TeRa: Your Digital Frustration Personified

So that’s TeRa – the deranged laptop with a smashed screen for a face. He represents the annoyed, rushed, and sometimes fearful technophobe that exists in all of us. He serves as both a warning about the pitfalls of technology and as the perfect mascot for a business dedicated to making technology less frightening and more useful for small business owners.

TeRa reminds us that technology should work for you, not against you – and that’s exactly what my services aim to deliver: practical, straightforward technology solutions without the headache.

Has technology ever driven you to TeRa-levels of frustration?
